Top Performances of 2013/2014 Olympic Season

The figure skating season has officially come to an end. Here’s the first of my two review posts for the season.

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford Worlds Short Program:
– This program is magical and the story behind it inspiring. Meagan changed up her look and they skated it flawlessly at Worlds.

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy – Worlds Freeskate:
– A perfect way to end their career. Dropping the 3A was the best thing to happen to this program. It’s a gorgeous program, and they get the 5th World title they’ve been looking for.

Honourable Mentions

Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov – Olympics Short Program:
– Gorgeous skated like Olympic champions. Amazing skating.

Yuzuru Hanyu – Olympics Short Program:
– World Record! This program is perfect for Yuzu and he skated it the best he could in Sochi. I’ll be sad to see it go.

Patrick Chan – Trophee Eric Bompard Freeskate :
– The best Mens FS of the season. Clean and solid. Classy and elegant. This is the skate he wanted in Sochi.

Honourable Mentions

Patrick Chan – Trophee Eric Bompard Short Program:
– Gorgeous program that he skated brilliantly. This was a great competition for Patrick.

Jason Brown – US Nationals Freeskate:
– This performance went viral. Jason Brown became a rockstar. I still remember my sister watching this skate.

Nam Nguyen – Junior Worlds Freeskate:
– What a young talent! Clean program! He could be Canada’s top man next season

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir – Olympics Short Dance:
– Perfect. And the adorable jig at the end.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir – Olympics Free Dance:
– No one else comes close.

Honourable Mentions

Canada's Kaitlyn Weaver, second from right, reacts as she sees the scores for her and Andrew Weaver's ice dance program at the worlds Saturday.Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje – Worlds Free Dance:
– I think they should have become World Champions after this one. Sexy, sultry, hot and gorgeously skated.

Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov – Olympics Free Dance:
– I love this Free Dance. The dark black swan theme works perfectly. It’s dynamic and exciting. And these two couldn’t have skated it better in Sochi.

tumblr_n19hebRaWj1rmbfdco1_400Carolina Kostner – Olympics Short Program:
– I’ve never been a bigger Carolina Kostner fan than after I saw this program. It is simply exquisite.

Mao Asada – Olympics Freeskate:
– After such a disappointing short program Mao had nothing to lose and nailed her freeskate. Arguably the best performance that night. I was so happy for her, happy tears.

Honourable Mentions

Kaetlyn Osmond – Olympic Team Event Short Program:
– Kaetlyn Osmond’s clean short in the Team Event in Sochi, extremely exciting on Olympic ice.

Julia Lipnitskaya – Europeans Freeskate:
– I love her Schindler’s List program, the girl in the red coat. She has a seriousness and intensity about her skating that works so well with this program. Before the Olympic excitement she skated it best here.

And there’s even more that didn’t make the cut. With all the controversy surrounding the sport this season, let’s not forget these performances and why we love figure skating.
